Grade: Upper primary and secondary

Subject: English.

Holidays are a very important part of everyone’s life. Everyone deserves to take a break from the monotony to rejuvenate and maintain their health. Here are the lesson plan and activities to teach a holiday theme. The lesson is prepared using the 'Thinglink' tool.

Task 1: Matching - Where does it go?
There are many ways to spend a holiday. And you may also travel the world and discover new places and experiences to get more exposure. Here some different types of holidays. Ask your students to write their names under the pictures.

Task 2: Read the story - A trip to Andaman.
Jai had a holiday trip to Andaman with his parents and sister Amala. They went to Andaman last summer. They went by ship from Chennai to Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar islands. The ship looked much bigger than his school building. It had four storeys. It set out after sounding a loud horn. People who had come to see off their friends and relatives cheered them up by waving their hands.
Tall buildings, cell towers, and factory chimneys began to vanish gradually. Soon everything around us began to look dark and calm but inside the ship, it was all bright and beautiful. When they closed the windows and doors of their cabin, they did not feel the movement of the ship. On the second day, they came to know that they were in the middle of the sea. The weather was pleasant on the sea. The day was sunny and the sea was reflecting the clouds like a flat mirror. They saw dolphins swimming along with the ship. They sprang and dived again and again. It was quite amusing. Amala was curious to know what other people were doing on the ship. So she went around.  She saw some watching films and some others eating and drinking in the restaurants. A few were buying things in the fancy stores. She was surprised to see some in a saloon getting their hair cut. It was the third day. Early in the morning, his Mom woke them up to show them the magnificent spectacle of the dawn at the sea. After two days, they reached Port Blair.
They visited a famous national monument, the Cellular Jail,  the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Havelock Island, Elephant beach, and  Radhanagar beach. They took lots of pictures of the beautiful sceneries. Jai and his sister Amala enjoyed a jolly ride on the elephant. They tasted delicious Tandoori fish and other seafood on the islands. They cherish the memory of the great fun they had. They will never forget their trip to Andaman. (Source: Andhra Pradesh 8th clas English textbook)

Task 3: Look deep
Holidays bring joy and comfort to everyone. We must try to make the most of the holidays and spend them wisely so we do not waste time. So we must know about the place before we go. Here is an interactive picture to know the places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The interactive image is prepared using the "Thinglink" tool. You can touch the ion to more about the place.
(Note: ThingLink is a tool for embedding multimedia content in images or videos. The media-embedding process, for both teachers and students, simply involves uploading an image or video and linking it to other resources on the Web.)

Task 3: Vocabulary - Guess the word.
Students may have known about the places, things, and activities in the Andaman. So make your students read the words related to the activities of a holiday or vacation. Ask your students to write the word under the pictures.

Task 4: Writing - Describe your holiday trip.
Jai and Amala went to the Andaman. They cherish the memory of the great fun they had. They will never forget their trip to Andaman. So ask your students to write answers to questions related to the best holiday of their life.

Task 5: Project work - Explore your town/city
Every place has its own uniqueness it may a cool new hi-tech building or an antique ancient monument, a busy booming mall, or quiet peaceful natural scenery. It may be famous for its mouth-smacking cuisine or a special variety of fruits unique only to that place.
So ask your students to explore their town or city and collect the information. Write answers to questions and paste some pictures. Share with their friends.

You can also see the digital lesson on Neighborhood and Public Places.

Hope you enjoy the lesson plan and the activities. Thank you.
