Food Fun - A Lesson Plan and Activities to Teach about Healthy Food Habits.

Lesson: Food for health
Grade: Primary and upper primary.
Subject: English and Environmental science.

Food is something that provides nutrients. Nutrients are substances that provide: energy for activity, growth, and all functions of the body such as breathing, digesting food, and keeping warm; materials for the growth and repair of the body, and for keeping the immune system healthy.
Here are some sets of activities to teach about good food and healthy food habits. You can use these activities to teach online.

Task 1: Warm-up activity.
Here is a small warm-up activity to make your students active and start an interesting lesson. Here are some sets of food and non-food items. Ask your students to identify the things that they eat and drink. They should touch on the image. When they touch on the image, a tick or cross symbol appears to check their understanding. It's a fun activity for the students to differentiate things.

Task 2: Puzzle - What am I?
Eating right is one of the most important aspects of healthy living. A nutritious, balanced diet keeps our bodies moving and helps fight off diseases. So different food items help our bodies in a different way. Here is an activity to guess the name of the food item using the given clues. The activity helps to know the benefits, nature, and importance of the food item.
Ask your students to read the clues and guess the thing. They can touch on the image to check whether the guess is right or wrong.

Task 3: Read the story and watch the video.
The Healthy Girl
Saritha's family lives in a village. She is healthy and active. She eats healthy food. Her mother prepares groundnut, coconut laddus, and chikkies. She never eats chips and samosas.
"Can you say, why does her mother prepare groundnut and coconut laddus?"
"Why do we say Saritha is a healthy girl?"
Saritha learned about healthy food in her school. Her teacher explained the importance of healthy food by playing a video. So after then she never eats unhealthy food. Here is the video. Watch the video and know the importance of healthy food. Click here to answer the simple questions.

Task 4: Think
Healthy eating is about eating smart and enjoying your food. How can you change your eating habits? To eat a healthy diet, you may need to make some changes. Remember that you can change your eating habits a little bit at a time. Small changes are easier to make and can lead to better health. Here are some tips you should always remember and follow.
Ask your students to read the below tips and share their healthy habits with their friends and teacher.

Task 5: Activity: Healthy or Not?
Students have known what is healthy and unhealthy food. So here is an activity to differentiate healthy and unhealthy food. Ask your students to observe the pictures and read the below statements carefully. And then put the 'thumbs up' for the healthy food and 'thumbs down' for the unhealthy food.

Task 6: Describe a fruit:
We love fruits and also healthy. Fruits are big, red, sweet, and tasty. Tell your students to observe the below video. And also tell them to describe fruit/fruits and share the video.

Task 6: I like...& I dislike...
The world is full of good food. Every day, we make choices about the food we eat and our lifestyles. Everyone has different food habits. Some may like pizzas and some may like idli. Some may not like chicken. So ask your students to write down their like and dislike food things in their respective boxes from the help box. Later ask them to share their answers through an audio clip.
Ex: I like biryani. I dislike brinjal.
Hope the activities are useful and enjoy the lesson. Thank you!
