Punctuation Marks- Comprehensive Writing Activity to the Bilingual Classrooms

Punctuation marks are one of the important concepts for proper writing skills. It is also an essential topic in English language teaching. Punctuation gives the right meaning and functioning of the sentence in a paragraph. Especially in the primary stage, "conventions of writing" is one of the language skills in the English language. It covers the proper usage of 'capitalization, full stop, question mark, comma, and exclamation mark.' Students should have a proper understanding of the usage of the punctuation marks.

In bilingual classrooms where English is the second or third language, the mother tongue takes a crucial role in teaching. Students understand any concept or topic by connecting with its meaning in their mother tongue. So the punctuation marks topic was taught by connecting the same concept in our mother tongue. I taught the topic using stick puppets to understand their meaning and usage. I explained their functioning in writing in both Telugu (Mother tongue) and English simultaneously.

After explaining the functioning of each punctuation mark, 'capitalization, full stop, comma, question mark, and exclamation mark,' I gave a worksheet to my students to write an example sentence in both languages for each punctuation mark. It gave a comprehensive understanding of the concept. The bilingual teaching helps me to deal with the multigrade classrooms and helps students to better understand the concept.
