"Personal cleanliness and hygiene - Lesson plan and activities."

Lesson: Personal Cleanliness - Hygiene
Grade: Primary
Skills: Speaking, reading, and creative expression.

Personal hygiene is very important in our lives. It's also a symbol of one's dignity and confidence. Why cleanliness and hygiene are important in our lives to get a healthy life is the main objective of the lesson.

Difference between cleanliness and hygiene:
The term cleanliness should not be used in place of hygiene. Cleaning in many cases is removing dirt, waste, or unwanted things from the surface of objects using detergents and necessary equipment. Hygiene practice focuses on the prevention of diseases through the use of cleaning as one of several inputs.

Activity: Picture Interaction
Ask the below questions by displaying the picture.

  1. What are the people doing in the picture?
  2. What might be the time then?
  3. What do you do after waking up from sleep?
  4. What happens if you don't brush your teeth?
  5. We should use soap for bathing daily. Why?
  6. When do you take a head bath in a weak?
  7. Does your mother allow you to play after taking a bath? Why?
After a small discussion on these questions, the teacher should elicit the vocabulary "bathing, combing, going to the washroom, clean, morning, paring, brushing, playing, and healthy.

Along with that teacher should encourage the children to use these words in a sentence and ask the children to describe the picture.
  • He/She is bathing.
  • He/She is combing.
  • He/She is brushing.
  • He/She is going to the washroom.
  • He/She is paring nails.
This will give scope to develop speaking skills.

Activity: Speaking Activity using flashcards

Call eight volunteers to the dais or board and distribute (not in the correct order) the flashcards and tell them not to show that card neither to the class nor to another volunteer. Then tell your students to stand in a row towards the class. And then tell your students to say a sentence about what's happening in the picture by showing the flashcard to the whole class one by one.

Say like, the first action word, and then the sentence.

1. Waking up: He is waking up.

2. Brushing: He is brushing.

3. Eating: He is having breakfast.

4. Combing: He is combing hair.

5. Bathing: He is bathing.

6. Going to school: He is going to school.

7. Playing: He is playing.

Once they complete the task ask your class to say the sentences while they show the flash card to the class. This will help them to practice the sentences well. Then tell the students to stand in the correct sequence as per the activities we do regularly. Then repeat the sentences in the sequence. This will give your young learners to remember the daily activities well.
Then ask your children "Why should we do all these every day?" After a small discussion introduce the word "HYGIENE." Then tell everyone should do these activities for personal cleanliness and hygiene. So this is our today's lesson.

Activity: "Yes-Yes, No-No."

To do this activity we should keep a few things we use to clean and wash our bodies. Along with that, we mix other things like pens, pencil balls, mugs...etc to do this activity. Then get three boxes, one is labeled as "Yes", another one is "No" and the rest is to keep all these objects. Then keep the "yes" and "no" boxes on the table. Then say to your students, when the teacher shows an object to the children, they should say "yes- yes" if it's used for cleaning and washing our body and put the object in the yes box, if not say "no-no" and put in the no box.

By doing this activity we can list out the things we use to clean our body.
Example: Soap, brush, comb, towel and nail cutter...etc.

After this activity ask a few questions to enlighten the importance of small things to keep our body healthy.

1. When do you wash your hands?
2. How do you wash your hands?
3. What is needed to brush your teeth?

After a small discussion conclude the lesson by a rhyme.

Waking up early is my habit,
Chak chak chak, Chak chak chak.
Brushing is my habit,
Kitch kitch kitch, kitch kitch kitch.
Bathing is my habit,
Lal lal la, lal lal la.
Going to school is my habit,
Read and write, read and write.
Playing is my habit,
Jump and run, jump and run.

You can see the writing activities of the lesson in the below link.

I hope this cumulative lesson plan will help you to make your class interesting.
