Grammar is a very difficult part to teach and also learn to children. We cannot teach grammar in a formal way to the primary children since they don't have such cognitive capacity to understand the rules. So we should teach in a contextual way. We derive the content from known to unknown and establish the rules finally. So I always plan and develop different innovative activities to teach grammar topics for my primary students.
I panned this activity to teach Common and Proper Nouns for my 4th-grade children. I designed this worksheet to understand the topic easily and attract them towards the class. Once I gave an explanation about the Common and Proper Nouns, I played them a language game.
Language game: “Sit and stand”
- It’s a just a simple sit and stand game.
- If you say sit children will sit, say stand they will stand.
- But here, if you say a common noun, children will sit, if you say proper noun children will stand.
So this game helped them understand the nouns and also remember easily.
Later, I told them that we are going to do an activity on this in the next period. In the next period, I gave this worksheet along with the A4 size chart piece. I asked my students to paste the worksheet on the chart and colour the pictures and letters. And I instructed them to cut along the line of the windows to make them open.
Then I told my children to divide every window into two sections one is for common noun and the second one is for proper noun and put the headings also. Then I told them that write the Common and Proper Nouns of the topic that was labelled on the window. (Person, Place, Thing, and Animal are labelled on the windows). I facilitated them to complete the task themselves. Finally I told them to read and present. You can watch my children's presentation in the below video. I hope you enjoy the activity and plan to do in your class.
